First seen in the stop-gap release Halo 3: ODST, Firefight Mode is a fantastic Co-operative online experience for up to 4 players, as they desperately fight off wave after punishing wave of Covenant attackers until finally it becomes too much. Firefight is at its core a survival game mode, in which the squad of up to 4 players must fight wave after wave of enemies, working together to hold out for as long as possible before they are overwhelmed. With Firefight 2. Enemies come in individual Waves, of which 5 make up a Round. An infinite number of Sets can theoretically be played – the enemy Waves will keep getting harder and harder till the squad of players cannot survive the assault any longer. To make things both more tactical and more difficult, the squad of players are restricted to a shared pool of just 7 lives during a Firefight Match.

One of E3 ‘s more pleasant surprises had to be Bungie’s vow that Halo: Reach would feature a reformed version of Firefight, a co-op mode that many felt did not live up to the hype in its Halo 3: ODST debut. Even though Bungie extensively detailed the parameters of Firefight at E3, its promises of matchmaking, customizable “Skulls” to vary difficulty, and an ever-changing gameplay experience were merely spoken words. It’s like seven minutes in heaven, only instead of being with that girl you daydreamed about in high school, you’re with a well-oiled battle rifle and an ugly contingent of Covenant grunts. First, the game looks outstanding, and the gameplay is very sleek. You can hear the armored Covenant transports and drop ships before you see them.

Kill 10 enemy vehicles in Firefight Matchmaking. Wow, someone really needs to convince Bungie that Baby Jesus cries every time a Covie vehicle gets destroyed.
To play Firefight matchmaking you need Gold. You can play solo without Gold. You cannot earn Season Points/unlock Reach’s cosmetic items.
Seasons have also been added to the game, along with Season Points. Each Season will feature a new theme, playlists and featured modes, and new unlockable items in the form of cosmetics. Anything that you have already unlocked will stay with you in the game. Season Points are the currency that you need to earn to get your hands on the seasonal items. Season Points are earned by playing the game.
As you level up your Global Rank, by completing activities in the game on dedicated servers, you will earn Season Points. The activities mean multiplayer in the matchmaking queue and online Firefight. There will also be challenges that, when completed, will reward Season Points. XP is awarded at the end of each round of multiplayer or Firefight, and it is based on the length of the match, and your earned medals.

In the version, some players are elites attacking with the covenant, and some are the spartans with the human defenders. The spartan counter you saw was the amount of lives left for the defending players. Your job as the elite is to simply kill the spartans until they run out of lives. This was originally in matchmaking but it was quickly discovered that the elites were OP with so much help and it was dropped.
I guess its in anniversary.
